This film had been sitting in my recommendation list for Netflix for so long, but I kept passing over it.  The movie cover was interesting but not enough to pull my interest enough to add it to my queue.  Then one day we just needed something on in the background for the sake of noise, so I put it on.  It was barely 20 minutes into the film when I heard a piece of dialogue that made me do a double take.  I watched for another 5 minutes before restarting the film from the beginning and really watching it.

Lo is a horror comedy, but not how I had really seen before, which for me was refreshing as I’ve seen an ungodly amount of movies, especially in the horror genre.  It follows Justin as he summons the demon Lo to help him get back his girlfriend April, that was kidnapped by demons.  The film quality really balances the minimalist set, you never felt like your watching a cheap independent film.

There was singing, some slightly bloody imagery, the effects for the creature Lo and the other demon whose name escapes me right now were quite good, given the overall simplicity of the film.  While staying in the pitch black void with Lo, you can see Justin and April’s relationship depicted by them in stage productions reminiscent of high school theatre.  It shows the story of how they met and a couple of instances in between, to the night she was taken.  But what really set the level for me was the dialogue.  It was good, clever, funny, everything a good script should have.

I really don’t want to give too much away by discussing the film, as this is one movie I don’t want to spoil for anyone.  The visuals of the movie is pretty much like watching theatre, if theatre was this fun all the time.  It’s 80 minutes worth watching that is funny, interesting and dare I say touching at times.  I can’t say much more about this movie that won’t sound like I’m kissing somebodies ass or getting a couple of bucks under the table, of which I have done neither, though money is always appreciated.  But do yourself a favor, slap this baby on your instant queue, grab some snacks and freaking enjoy an awesome little film.  That’s right, I said I awesome.
